A Definite Hair Don't
This is not Edna Turnblad.
Definitely NOT Edna Turnblad.
Though he's gotta helluva 'tude here (l.), a couple of lbs and this is one of my all-time faves - still not.
YAY!!!! ITS EDNA TURNBLAD (R.I.P. Harris Milstead a.k.a. Divine)Last year, I thought that the remake of the 1988 movie "Hairspray" was one of those rumors down there with Usher playing Marvin Gaye in a pre-production biopic or a remake of 1976's "Sparkle" with Raven Symone and Ashanti (the latter is a def way to go if you want the movie studio or production co. to file bankruptcy). Anyhoo, for those who may be too young to remember, the original John Waters (who also had a small part) movie starred Ricki Lake (50 lbs heavier), the late Sonny Bono, Tab Hunter, Divine, the late Ruth Brown, Pia Zadora, Debbie Harry, one of those actors that always plays Elvis on TV and a bunch of other people who you could not ever picture together in the same zip code but like Thai food, it may sound strange but is damn good!
The best way to describe the REAL "Hairspray" experience is like this. You have a friend or relative (mine was a cousin who lived in the "jungle" section of L.A.) who you really don't need to see but you want to see them and stay longer than you should because you don't know what will happen next and even more strange, you feel at home there. Not only is that person a little too "different" but so is their supporting cast of characters (other member of their household and/or neighbors).
