Many years ago, I was fascinated to hear about a then plus-size woman who made it in radio on her own terms. Though Robin Quivers is her own brand of greatness, without the King of all Media, she would probably still be at a little DC station giving strictly news.

So before she made it to the West Coast airwaves via syndication, I wrote this article because I couldn't wait for her arrival to my cable station, radio. etc.

Though she came across in a crazy hot pink/leopard print blaze with the boobs, that manbearpig husband of hers and her candor, she was still watchable.

Then I noticed a pattern. She had the most boring guests on her show and you don't want to hear every detail of your best friend's kid, let alone her son that obviously has too many material items and a father that doesn't stay home enough.

So now, she's at 500+ shows. Queen Latifah didn't make it that far. Neither did Richard Bey (correct me if I'm wrong). But as a morbid way to celebrate, she tells the world that people who are not with hair extensions/weaves/wigs and plastic surgery are jealous. Courtesy of Clutch.

Yep, I know I'm late but please! I'm jealous because I can't afford to pay someone to cut and chop on me. Hell, do you know how many women are going broke trying to get my (original) waistline-to-hip ratio? Forget that I couldn't wear designer jeans from the 80s or 501s but my booty is in! And even to my YT and Latina friends who are not as blessed, so what? I'm not going to love them any more or less for their physical "shortcomings". While hanging out with girlfriends can be fun, there's nothing like sharing time with a special friend that will bring a smile to your face. Divorcing Myself From the F Word

Like any separation, this has taken much thought but the truth is that there are many days that I don't feel like a feminist.

When my journey of self-discovery began back in the mid-nineties, I was fresh from a dreadful acquaintanceship (it didn't last long enough to evolve into anything that was mentally or emotionally serious though I had no problem with the physical aspect). Though I was trying to read more about women who led a led-than-traditional life, slow down, (and slow down the "liberation" of my lady parts) I was also slowly discovering that as non-beautiful as I am, as limited as my education may be and though I would never be a little, cute teeny-weeny thing, I had a lot of power to make positive changes.

Ever since, many public figures - from fellow bloggers to hip-hop recording artists have come along to let me know about their power. Though I love hearing feedback and people's life stories, I'd later find that my "sheroes" were more confused than I could ever be.

Many made unwise business decisions which would lead to the disintegration of their brand, others sacrificed their loyalty for an industry that not only hates women but many of it's "leaders" have closeted homosexual tendencies. Then there were those who started off being unhappy with their outside only to mutilate themselves with binging, bad plastic surgery and career moves that are just simply contradictory. Some would leave us before their 40th birthday.

So here I am, five years later and in the middle of a restructuring that is less about history, theory and those things that are supposed to "empower" me. These days, as I watch my news, I wonder if this is the end of days. Children can't go to school without worry about being molested or assaulted. People dressed up as law enforcement corrupt neighborhoods and the list goes on.

I still plan to stand for everything that is right about womanhood, even as the media gives more attention to those with booty pads, inflated alimony/child support payments and abuse the powers of womanhood than they do those who are helping their communities.

Mad, Mad Mama: What Makes You Good Anyway?

First, Happy Mothers Day to those that are taking time to see to it that their children have the best in life. Even if it means sacrificing your own needs.

That's my definition of a good mother.

When I was coming along, my grandmother left her job at the bank to see to it that I had full-time care within the family.

Even my own mother has given me some small tokens of wisdom that have helped me to this day.

Then again, I'm from another era where it was rare for children to have a real rapport with their parents outside of life and school issues. In most cases, the mother was a feared figure by many of us kids. Even if she had ways that could interpreted as skankish.

These days, mothers have no shame in letting it all hang out. If you don't believe me , ask Jerry Springer or Maury Povich.

Here's one account of a 32-year-old mother who took being friendly to her daughter's friend to a whole 'nuther level.

Thank goodness there are many who still agree that the lines in parenthood should not be blurred so that boundaries are never crossed. Many who call their mothers names and such (even if she deserves it) will have a hard time with problem-solving skills because it starts at home.

I'm no expert and still have none of my own but as former employee of the L.A. public school system and person who has observed great parents raising wonderful kids with few resources as well as those who have the degrees and the green to match but no common sense.

I had a friend over for tea last week and we discussed how some of our old gang are struggling to keep the pounds off after hitting the big 4-0. She told me about an experience she had while visiting relatives on the East Coast. For the first time in years, she went horseback riding in New Jersey with a couple of childhood friends.

I was shocked and amazed as she hardly likes to ride the bus. She told me that there are some thing you never forget. Though she needed help with getting the English horse tack together, she said that the ride was refreshing and brought back memories.

Yet by the time she returned to her parents' house, she was drenched in sweat and a nice, cold shower had never felt better.

Being a city chick, I wondered where in my area could I get find supplies though I happen to know of a few riding places. She told me how to get riding helmets online and that I just need to dress in my most comfortable jeans.

Thank goodness my skinny jeans are now my baggy jeans and my eating pants can be put to use.

Pay Bills or Be a Feminist?

I love being able to come home to four walls every day but sometimes I have to ask myself at what price?

Though I'm having a blast working at home full-time, MY BILLS ARE KILLING ME!

There's a fee, then a late fee and interest on top of that.

Then the bill is 3-4 times to original size.

Thank goodness most everyone pays on time but it's not like I was ever a big spender.

Anyway, copywriting is what I love the most but I see why some people may feel it's selling out.
For one, I'm against get-slim-quick ads but I find myself pitching these like I made it in my own lab.
Then there's the products that are just funny or crazy (there is now a line of gum that will wake you up, calm you down, make sure you get some of your daily nutrients and help you through travel sickness.smh)

Then there are the companies that want you to cater to him. Now, this is no biggie but where is the reciprocation. Oh yeah, it was SO GOOD that he just happened to fall asleep afterwards so I'll have to wait until the morning.

Sometimes, I miss when I could just select my own topic from a content company that will own the rights, have ridiculous seo requirements and more.

Who Needs Feminism...Really?

My life has been something of a dichotomy when it comes to feminist beliefs. Though I've always open to feedback and realize that I am not a solid source of women's history, I've felt that my contribution has been worthy considering that my brand is not backed by a major corporation and outside assistance, in general, has been minimal.

So now Clutch magazine, takes the time to ask if we need feminism? A site dedicated to promoting positivity among women of color that at the same time, has posts about every both factual and speculative about the usual media darlings - Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Lady Gaga and of course, Beyonce.

Yeah, I know they're common search terms and everybody's got bills to pay but what about the women behind the scene, what about women who on NOT on camera high, legs open and doing something I'm sure their grandmother is REALLY proud of, unless she's 45.

Anyway, I'm not going to preach about how we as women need to stop accepting less than we deserve in relationships (platonic and non-platonic), stop letting TV and the internet raise our children and just stop the stupidity. Yeah, I said it women who gossip about others knowing their husband may hold things down financially but they accept his infidelity and lies. Stop blaming society (and your mama) for everything wrong in your life. It takes steps as I can tell you that it doesn't happen overnight.

So do we really need to know how many women have been elected as governor in the U.S. but by using the internet and media to promote positive images of ourselves, we can create unity.

A Bond Like No Other

I recently had a job with a client in the UK and figured while I was there, I would meet with a old girlfriend. Upon entering her flat, I noticed many plants all around. When I looked up close for bugs, she told me about the online florist serenata that delivered the best in floral arrangements.

Since my sinuses are so sensitive, I was on guard for something to go wrong but it never happened. As we spoke about life, love and work, I was suddenly at ease. As I mentioned my last break-up, I could only focus my eyes on the pink orchid arrangement she had as a centerpiece on the kitchen table.

When she assured me that dumb donkeys like my ex need to be left alone, we laughed until we cried. Before, when discussing this, I would sometimes tear up but this time I felt so relaxed in her home that I think I nodded off on the balcony.

Before leaving, I thanked her and again, complimented her place which reminded me of a new-age sanctuary of sorts. There were no judgements - just plenty of tea, desserts and good fun.

She also gave me a small Guzmania as a parting gift. When I got back to the States, I checked with the experts in indoor plant care. It's been a few weeks now and she's still holding up in my home.

Rewarding Kids with the Best

Now, you may have had to put your foot down when it comes to day-to-day parenting but you're not mad yet! So why not reward your child and you with a little fun? Even if money is a little tight, there are some ways to get out of the house for little money.

One of my friends got a couple of disneyland tickets for her and her son, who getting to that restless age and what they ended up doing to save money will have you thinking about getaways for the warmer months.

First, they had burgers, fries and soda at home right before leaving. For the same price of one brand name beverage in a small size, she got a six-pack of the store brand for less. While they both cannot get enough of the fresh churros you get from the vendor carts there, they knew that eating a meal would hurt her pockets a little.

Instead of driving all the way, she found a bus that goes most of the way from her house. She'd been really trying to not drive more than necessary and she found that the sightseeing allowed her and her son to bond. No road rage, expensive gas and the air was a little cleaner.

With a little creativity, you and your child can have fun on the road!

When Getting Off Goes Wrong (Again)

My first foray into sex toys was nearly 15 yrs ago and despite having the giggles at Spencer's Gifts during my teen years, I really had no desire to do anything that wasn't a human male.

So I meet someone later and because they have a 'situation', I'm coerced into getting something a toy. Without giving too much away, they weren't the most gifted down there so I didn't want to get a dildo that would give him a complex. (Later, I would find that just about EVERYTHING gave him a complex including a pretty nice Lenny Kravitz poster that I was forced to take down once we became common law).

Anyway, I hated the thing, he loved it (bka having the control of telling me what to do) and despite the early differences, we named it Willie. At six inches, it took me back to Eddie Murphy's Raw where he described going hungry for a period of time and being extra-happy when you get a Ritz cracker (sex). It was only okay when I went for long stretches of abstinence.

After it got germs and buildup, I trashed it and then came Tiny. For one, I hated the way he came into the picture. It was during a moment and you hear the rustle of a paper bag and all of the sudden, you feel a fist down there.

Now, for those out of the know, fisting is not an impulse thing unless the person says that the way they like it. So to be fisted when least expected is really grounds to kick you out on the street, even if your name is also on the lease.

So long story short, I hated that I don't know where "Tiny" came from. The buyer had a bad habit of being cheap which was probably why he made me itch. Remembering those informative ads in the back of BUST magazine, I told him in detail why our new friend may not be healthy for what was left of the relationship. He just shrugged and walked away.

While laughing at a bunch of middle aged women get excited about dildos and those things (in this economy,make your money honey), I come across an article about organic products being used for sex toys and have a little ray of hope as pre-menopausal urges cause bolts of passion that already have my future husband in draft/finish mode. SMH So this way, I don't have to rush back out there, LOL.

What Makes a Good Mad, Mad Mama?

I've received some accolades for this column and others feel that it's parenting satire. No, it is not intended to be funny but yes, we are still taking submissions and for Mother's Day 2012, we want to know what makes a good parent and what moment gave you that "Ah-ha" moment.

One book that moved me the most was Terry McMillan's Mama. Though the subject is Black/AA, I've seen portions this character in White, Latina an even Asian mothers who found themselves in a struggling economy that knows no color lines.

As for GENEROUS, things have been slow and at times, discouraging but we are still accepting submissions. Right now, we're looking at an overhaul for our upcoming 5-year anniversary. Stay tuned!

My old reusable grocery book broke a few weeks ago, of course with all of my groceries in it. It was very sad and it also made me mad at the same time. I hadn't had it for very long, so it was quite upsetting. So now I need to find a new grocery bag but I'm looking for one that's a lot more durable than the one that I had before.
When I was looking for some good but affordable grocery bags, I saw some information on debt settlement that I had to stop and read. I have some debt and would love some help in dealing with it, so I was really excited to find all of that information.
I found all types of grocery bags, even some really cute designer ones for too much. But I settled on one that had a pretty high rating but was also really inexpensive. I was so excited to find one that came in leopard print pattern that the print along helped me make that decision about buying it.

AIDS Survivor Celebrates 50th B-Day

While I plug away at long assignments for clients while dodging my creditors (in the past four months, it has gone from 'wait in line' to 'the line is moving slowly' to 'ok, I can give you a partial payment...a week later than the due date), my YouTube channels are what get me by. Though a Miss Fitts podcast is not in the immediate future, I remembered someone who can really share some wisdom.

I read Rae Lewis Thornton's story in Essence magazine back in the mid-90s. Old biddies like me probably remember HUES and similar mags getting a lot of attention and Essence decided to become a little edgy as well (too bad they suck now). Ms. Thornton told her harrowing tale of being an educated woman that was diagnosed with HIV at the age of 23.

The thing that stuck in my mind the deepest was her account of dating and the number of men that wanted intimacy ...without a raincoat...after she disclosed her health status to them. WOW

This even made me think about how I was living my life at the time. Though I kept protection on my person, I had to wonder why. Why shouldn't I have a meaningful relationship? Why should I ALAWYS spare the expense for protection (Clinton was in office so there was no reason to be chronically broke back then)? Why can't I abstain for some time and get to know me better?

Though my choice in long-term relationship has not been the greatest, it has taught me some things I would not have realized while running around L.A. having one-time relations with folks that didn't even know my last name.

And I'm not judging those who do choose to have one-time stands as everyone has their own path to walk.

Ok.

Now the good news is that 27 years after being diagnosed Ms. Rae Lewis Thornton is with in good spirits,even on days when (full-blown) AIDS has taken over.

We wish her well in her journey to educate others as she did me nearly 20 years ago.

No overexposed rapper/dancer is going to tell me how to get my party started and though I never thought much about Belvedere vodka, I have to wonder what the hell this planet (not just the States) are coming to.

Now that my freelance income includes marketing support for different clients, I have to admit that I do compromise my beliefs from time to time. Hell, I've got bills to pay. However, I will not take the shock route when it comes to a person's well being.

So Belvedere vodka decides to make light of a sexual assault by depicting a woman being grabbed from behind with a look of fear on her face. Mr. Octopus Asshole is cheesing and the caption reads 'Unlike Some People...Belvedere Goes Down Smoothly'.

Yeah, how about an ad where my size 10 meets his crotch in a SMOOTH, swift motion?

Celebrate the Good Times

Lately, things have been kind of rough for me with the money changes I have gone through. However, nothing has made me more happy than to receive two graduation invitations in the mail from people I care about.

The first was an old friend that made all kinds of sacrifices to return to college. Going to trade school while working full-time was one struggle but when she decided to get her degree in Architectural Engineering, all of us became her instant cheering squad and sometimes, babysitters.

While her oldest could help me around the house, I think he got hip to the fact that wash the dutch oven is not a game. Other times, I had to console her children to let them know that their mommy loves them very much.

This was also during the time when the recession was at an all-time high. Due to a layoff at her job, she had to work for a number of temporary agencies and sometimes even do domestic work to feed her family. Even the cheering squad was affected during this time as many of us wondered how we were going to pay our bills.

Now, this dear friend is an inspiration to us all who want to better ourselves against the odds.

When I saw something from one young lady that I'd known since she was an egg, and we weren't sure if she would make it out of preschool since she was very hyperactive.

She even went through some family challenges but I was happy to be there for her in times of need. Especially when it came time to create drill cards so that she would stop cramming for exams.

I would like to share more about these ladies but you will have to tune in to find more inspirational stories like this one about women who win against the odds.

The other day a friend told me about our grocery store’s website that is actual pretty useful. By how useful, I mean I saved twenty bucks at the store today using coupons. So anyway, using my wireless internet connection I logged onto the site and created an account. I was able to link my bonus card to the account by typing in the number. I was able to load coupons from the website onto my card. There were hundreds of coupons. I think that they have all of the manufacturer’s coupons ( the ones that come in the Sunday paper). They have the on the site until they expire. You can manage your coupons by seeing how many you have, putting them into categories, and creating a shopping list. I didn’t think that it would work when I went to the store to check out, but I was really surprised that every coupon that I had loaded onto the card showed up. You have to be careful to remember to get everything that you have a coupon for, but that’s why I print a list. It is really so easy!

Our Daughters, Our Future

Recently, a news article out of Los Angeles reported a Long Beach girl died as a result of fighting with another girl, allegedly over a boy she had a crush on. Courtesy of LA Weekly.

This brought back painful memories for me as I remember being in a verbal altercation as a teen with another female over a crush.

The problem was 1) He wasn't old enough to do anything for us in a monetary sense (although too damn old to consider speaking the girls in middle school) and; 2) He was a thug who didn't have a real job.

Long story short, both were a distant memory within a year of the incident. I was fortunate as there was nothing more than verbal blows and adjustment to a new school would distract me from any crushes for a while.

Though I didn't have the greatest examples growing up when it came to men and women relationships, I did have interest in doing other things besides hanging around with people who loved this kind of drama. Was it nurtured? NO

And I'm not saying this was the case with this young lady as both parents were in the home but unemployed. I can see where the signs of possible trouble would be easy for two people to overlook with that type of burden on their shoulders.

I have no real solution since I don't know all of the facts but this should be a lesson to mothers who choose to bring new "uncles" around their daughters often or stress the importance of dating as opposed to socializing for a real career they can look forward to as adults.

Mad, Mad Mama: Basic Ho Antics

Growing up, I was able to get anything I wanted. Cash, clothes, good grades, rent. Yep, with my looks, I could charm the venom out of a cobra.

Then I got pregnant by the local football hero. Though I wasn't happy, I wasn't really mad either. He came from good money and I didn't have to go to work the first five years of my daughter's life.

I was also bored around this time as well. So I began going to the gym during the day since I put on about 15 lbs since getting hitched.

In a short period of time, I began to meet new people and they encouraged me to make a living for myself for when Shenandoah started school. Wasn't too keen on it at first but when one person that was especially aggressive gave me the numbers, I was sold.

By the time she finished grooming me, I was ready for that man. That man had status, power and the money I needed to save for a rainy day. These clothes were not meant for the beer and peanuts dude you can find at any bar on the corner, they were for a mission.

The first visitor I had was an older man who liked toys and tongues as he wanted me to taste everything. It's not like I was blindfolded and truthfully I ate worse things at fast food places in the area.

Eventually, my marriage soured as my husband never let me forget that he was only here by shotgun. So I set him free and took our daughter to a condo that was waiting for me in the other side of town.

Though I made in one month what most secretaries make in six months, I was not happy. I wished I 'd taken the opportunity to return to school when Shenandoah was six. Now, my body looks good but I feel old and miserable.

I don't have to work but I feel lazy and really don't know what to do with myself. As my baby was turning into a young woman, the answer would stare me in the face.

A new visitor was in the habit of showing up everywhere - the gym, supermarket and even church. At first, I dismissed it as well as his strange comments but I figured he didn't require much pussy power, so I'll stick around for the moment.

Shenandoah was now 12 and tall like her father. All she knew about me was that I was a professional escort and that's the way I wanted to keep it. She told me that as long as I wasn't standing on the corner or stripping, it was fine with her.

One day, my daughter pointed to a car that had been following her around. That Lexus RX350 looked familiar but it didn't belong to my old clients, who were not far from retiring anyway. When I looked outside from the balcony, it was my new visitor standing on the sidewalk. This fool has crossed the line.

Instead, I played it cool and asked what was on his mind. He looked off to the side and then at me when he told me about a fantasy he had. It comes with the territory so I walked down to meet him and hopefully secure something for the following week since my profits were down,

I walked out wearing a sweatsuit and sandals and thought he was going to take me right there by the way he licked his lips. This is a job to me just like working at the mall is a job, overtime does not excite me.

When he told me about having a threesome with my daughter, I went cold.

He went on for about five minutes straight talking about my baby like she was a streetwalker and not the polite, smart young lady that I raised alone. She would not resort to doing what I did to make a living...ever.

There was no sense in making a scene since no real crime was committed. I felt cold for the entire day and called my best girlfriend who married rich to help me get my life together.

She showed me the ropes to ownership as I liquidated most of what visitors had given me over the years. By this time, some passed on or couldn't handle Viagra so the timing was right.

My daughter and I later moved to a small community nearby where people place values over money. I have ghostwritten several books and run a blog on the art of getting the man with money while keeping self in check.

Lately, I've gotten so much work that my back goes numb and sometimes I have a hard time walking. So I got a Pomeranian to keep me on my toes. I got him a few pieces of dog exercise equipment during the winter months but on warmer days, I like to walk to the dog park.

Sometimes me and a good friend sit on the Portable Bleachers and talk shop. She has crazy clients and so do I so we act as each others support system. And I'm so thankful she's there because I've had some moments when I've really had to blow off steam.

Once I was so hot that I stepped in something. And I tracked it into the house. Trust me, I wanted to blame the dog but those were my footsteps that were covered in poop.

So there was my good friend to the rescue again as it was she who suggested that the park get some Pet Waste Stations so that no one else should have to endure an oops.

Other than that, there are just some moments you can replace such as taking a midday break from business and feeling the warm California air hit you while sitting on Aluminum Bleachers. It's so much better than being stuck in an office.

I stopped adding "diet" a long time ago and instead, I modified my eating habits. Now, I'm not preaching as I will never take on diet ads or say which meal plan is better. My take is that the more veggies and whole grains you eat on a daily basis, the stronger your chances of weight loss. And don't underestimate the power of multivitamin either. They can alleviate Aunt Flo's drama that comes with being over 40 or help to curb sweet cravings we get just because.

The zine fest was pretty awesome filled with self-publishing hipsters of all ages and backgrounds, even though I was only there for 30 mins. tops. The music was nice and it was really cool to see so many different works...uncensored.

How Low Can the Media Go?

In the past week, I have watched different forms of media go in on the death of Ms. Whitney Elizabeth Houston. I didn't know her just like I didn't know Amy Winehouse or Etta James outside of being Donto from the 4th grade at West Athens ES mama. So though my brand brings in a little change for me (thanks to my audience *blows a ginger lip gloss kiss in the air*), there are some areas I refuse to touch.

Even as I run across people from my past and present who are dealing with addiction and mental issues, I refuse to discuss their problems with people that can't help them. This reminds me of that bad Lifetime Christmas movie where Vanessa Williams is a pop singer that has a dream that she dies and her people are happy because her record sales will go up, bringing in millions.

This is also to say that my fellow bloggers can also use a lesson in decorum. Sandra Rose has attacked the late Ms. Houston in more ways than one in the past week and she's also posted pics of Octavia Butler (The Help) taking a fall at a recent awards show (Link for pics/post). I won't go into details and I'm definitely not trying to censor people but why has media gone the gutter route in reporting news.

These days, I miss the "satire" of Howard Stern knowing there were some boundaries (at least when he was on terrestrial radio, much to his chagrin) when it came to reporting news. I say this as an Angeleno that is really getting effing tired of my local news using TMZ as a reliable source.

A lot has been going on as maintaining three blogs and keeping up with private clients had taken its toll. And some days, I feel sadder than Lana del Rey sounds (Where the hell is Fiona Apple, btw?) Not even sure if that last sentence was correct English and right now, I don't care. LOL

Despite my near-desperate need to pay bills, I do have some good news. I will be at the L.A. Zine Fest 2012 where you can get the latest issue of GENEROUS for free. It is Sunday, 2/19 at the Last Bookstore in Downtown L.A. No, I won't have a booth but I plan to mingle and such as I'm recharging my networking game and getting back into why I really went into business for myself.
