A Lesson in Easy Promotion

I have a friend who is an aspiring actor. While he can hardly be described as modest or shy about his minor accomplishments, his bank account is another story. Last month, we went to this movie premiere (he was an extra) and my friend became instantly inspired by these Eclipse movie t-shirts as a way to promote his work and possibly get the attention of more casting directors.

I asked him if he was going to use a print shop and he looked at me like I had a horn growing out of my head. He said that if it weren't for the web, he probably wouldn't be able to score the bit parts he's gotten over the past couple of years. Between his website, IMDB page and various social networks, the web has allowed him to make many virtual contacts.

He finished by emphasizing that he needed to up his game with a custom tee shirt that is sure to get attention of many in the town of Hollyweird. Then I realized that t-shirts have a long shelf life as long as they are kept clean and readable. They are also sort of passive as opposed to my friend passing out flyers to strangers or expensive glossies that may go into a slush pile.

My Nana

Love my nana but she’s what they call used to call a "spry little thing".

For someone who remembers when Eisenhower was President, has it pretty together and loves to stay young. Problem is keeping her entertained. She loves shopping and raves about new things like televisions, TV pricing and other electronic advancements. Her friends that are young enough to keep up with her have family or work obligations and watching regular TV all the time can be boring after a while. Every time I would ask about getting Dish TV for her home, she would just shrug and change the subject to when I’m going to have kids.

Have you heard of a “mama’s boy”? Well, my brother is a 6”4, 260 lb. “nana’s boy” who loves to rub it in people’s faces. Everything he does is magic in her eyes. Not hating but one time at a cookout where he burned almost every animal on the farm and sea beyond recognition (thank God I’m a vegan), my nana gushed until no end about how much she loved his DirecTV. He went on and on until I threatened to shove my corn on the cob down his throat. Yeah, I was a guest in his home but sometimes his bragging really works my nerves.

Mom resolved the whole argument (as always) by saying that our nana needs to one day just take her time and go over all the direct satellite tv offers one by one and pick one that fits her viewing needs.

One of the last things that a lot of people my age would want to do is chaperone a bunch of teenagers to a concert. But that’s just what I did last night for my church’s youth group, which includes my 14-year-old granddaughter.

I’ve helped out with the youth group for as long as I can remember, but here lately it has been in the capacity of teaching Sunday school and hosting cookouts at my house instead of going on trips with them. But when my granddaughter told me they needed another chaperone in order to go on a trip to Christian music festival, I agreed. They all wanted to go to it so much and I could afford to skip my book club meeting that day.

The music was a little louder than I expected, especially because I just went in for a free hearing test and got hearing aids last week. But I did have a good time and from what I can tell all the kids did too. I don’t think I’ll be going out to buy any of the bands’ CDs anytime soon, but they definitely put on a good show.

True story as to why you should buy a home .

Not long ago, I told the person I'm renting from that I would like a security door for the front part of the house because shady people come by "selling" things and are less-than-polite when you tell them you'll pass. Plus, the weather is getting warm and it may be cheaper than an air conditioner. His response was to give me a 'No Solicitation' sticker to put on my door!

What a piece of work.

Anyway, even if you are self-employed , have credit issues (something that came with getting my business off the ground) or only have a few dollars to put towards a down payment , talk to someone anyway. With a little information, you'll be surprised how much it easier it is in the long run like not dealing with landlord restrictions or is a borderline slumlord.

If you continue to pay rent, you may be sorry....I'm just saying.

Move to the City

After my husband and I divorced, I decided it was time for change! I decided I wanted to explore more than what I had, so after careful thought, decided to move to Las Vegas! After 12 years in a bad marriage, Las Vegas was just what I needed, and wanted.

I decided to rent a U-haul for the move. They were also able to sell me boxes to pack everything in and it was all for a really low price. I was able to rent the small one, since it was just me now.

Once everything was packed my friend came and helped me load up the U-haul. I had been cleaning as I could of the apartment I had been occupying, but there was still plenty left for me to do once it was empty. My friend and I spent another 2 hours cleaning after the U-haul was loaded.

I did a change of address online so I did not have to go to the post office. I was ready to leave this town behind as fast as I could. I also had ADT with home security video installed after I found a great company online. It was a great move, and a lot easier than I expected. I have my friend to thank for most of that! Life is great in Las Vegas!

As a woman of color, I've always had respect for Whoopi Goldberg's career. She didn't have the bourgeois image that Diahann Carrol is known for and she seemed to not give a care about designer labels. Yet, I didn't understand her other choices (Ted Danson debacle, Hollywood Squares for anyone who remembers the 90s) but, they were hers to make.

If you haven't heard already, she just @ssed herself out on this Mel Gibson thing . I mean really, even if you're willing to bet your entire fortune on the fact that he's not a racist, keep that to yourself, sis. He should have been taken out to pasture after 'sugar tits ' but since Hollyweird still needed to make money, someone forgot that is pass was temporary. Not that money solves all problems but I personally hope Oksana gets all that legal technicalities will allow for.

Entertaining Your Self at Home

Face it girl, you can only talk to your "BFFs" for so long when you're bored at home. Especially before conversation gets around to that certain habit you have that gets on everyone's nerves or some other thing you really weren't supposed to know but the beans got spilled...and it wasn't pretty. And now you all aren't speaking to each other.

Instead, ask your friends about home entertainment options. You know, the movies, specials featuring comics like Ellen, Jeff Woxworthy or Wanda Sykes. Or maybe you're into boxing or retro TV shows like The Munsters or Little House on the Prairie.

Now me, I'm a DVR junkie to the heart. No lie about it, a program pause and save fool! There's nothing like being able to record shows without wondering if one of the kids decided to tape Yo Gabba Gabba or Dora the Explorer over it.

One of my girlfriends swears that Time Warner Cable is convenient due to the fact that they have payment centers near her home.

Yet, another loves the customer service and sweet deals that Dish Network offers.

All of the options are good ones but let me tell you something else. Entertaining at home is cheap, you can pig out without worrying about leaving a tip or waiting in a long line to be somewhere that's extremely crowded. Do you know the last time I went to the movies, I got a $20 reserved seat and someone was sitting in it - and they refused to move!

Watch unlimited movies and special programming at home without the drama or stress.

I Blame Brangelina

I once had a friend who really went out of her way to be nice to me. I mean, treating me to lunch (even when I wasn't broke) and giving me money for helping her when she was ill (I'm a friend ... not a maid, DAMMIT). For a long time, I figured it to be a Southern hospitality thing, then I began to put the pieces together. She once stressed that she wanted for me to hang with some "friends" of hers but I may not be welcome because I'm darker than a paper bag. OK. Then she once went on about how she hated some members of her immediate family because of their extremely prejudiced ways. Now we're getting somewhere.

Well, I say if white guilt is what can build the Black and Brown communities, I say so be it. Why? I know that racism is a part of the darker-hued community. I don't need angry rap songs or half-assed written TV shows to remind me of this. I don't condone racism or sexism yet am a firm believer that the only way that women and other minorities can move forward is to be aware of the past. Yes, we Latinos, women, Blacks, Jews, Native Americans were all at one time mistreated (sometimes by our because they had more $). Why do an injustice to a community by going on Maury and for the umpteenth freaking time to not know 'who yo' babydaddy is'. Why should it be a miracle to anyone that I grew up in the 'hood and I speak English the way it is to be spoken? Why is it that when a successful, hetero man of color marries one of his own, it is miracle?

And here comes a random White person to turn some Brown kids' life around.

I once had a boss put an interesting spin on the "mixed" thing, "Purebred dogs may be pretty and win awards but they are weak and don't live as long. Mutts live a long time with little illness and have friendlier dispositions. Not to say humans are dogs but we can learn something from them about being a intermixed community that can be stronger." Hmm.

Well, I personally love and hate everyone equally, except maybe smart people. I'm a little more lenient when they have an attitude because maybe they had a nerd flashback or their head was about to explode from taking in so much information, IDK.

Anyway, Lisa Jeffcoat, wherever you are, know that you are missed and thank you for being a friend.

As you get older simple things, such as meeting people and going to the grocery store become much more difficult. Luckily, there is the internet. There are many advantages of the internet when it comes to elderly people. There are so many sites out there that are leaned toward grandparents that can help make their lives easier. First of all, many shopping stores are now going virtual. You can do your grocery shopping online and either have the food delivered to you or pick it up at the store. This is a great thing for grandparents who can't get around on their own. Also, many pharmacies are also available online. You can order your prescription drugs right over the computer. You can also use the internet to learn about issues seniors face, such as arthritis, hearing loss and osteoporosis.

Another great service the internet has for grandparents are social networks. Family is usually an essential part of grandparent’s lives. As you get older your family tends to spread out across the globe and it is harder to stay in touch. Now a day you can use social networks, such as Facebook, to keep in touch with your families. These networks are very user friendly and anyone from any age can use them.

From shopping to keeping in touch with families, the internet has many advantages for grandparents.

Men Should Realize That We Don't Care

Someone has created a Viagra-type pill for women (yeah, right ...WOOHOO) and the reasons they list for our drop in libido is effing hysterical. Though the reasons obviously vary for each woman, it's like the message isn't reaching either one of their heads. I'll try to summarize without rambling.

1. Since most of you men drag your feet when it comes to marrying us, this means we have to go get a job to support ourselves. Rent is high in most major cities so a good job, which is necessary to maintain ourselves, is normally stressful and/or tiresome. Therefore we do not care if you are horny.

2. Some of us have kids on top of working. Sometimes they are YOURS but for many reasons, we are the primary caretaker. Not that we mind but once their asses get to sleep is when we can catch our ZZZ's and start our day all over again. Throw some cold water on that boner and really help out sometimes.

3. We have choices. Not just that person who seeks random encounters (aka booty call) but we can choose NOT to deal with stupid conversations, taking a chance on bad B.O. (because you thought about me while playing ball so you had to rush right over), your pre-recession cheapness or anything else that kills any half-sane woman's libido before she can get it up.

Oh yeah, I'm Lil Eva. I used to rant on the GENEROUS zine and since that Miss Fitts chick has a podcast job now, I want some of that green too! My thing is complaining about the dating scene and stupid things that men say ...OFTEN. So you'll be seeing more of me online in the future.

My Favorite Satellite TV Cooking Show

One of the best parts of my day is when I get to watch the Rachael Ray Show in the mornings on Direct.tvsatellite TV. I take this hour and normally just relax with my cup of coffee and a notepad since it’s almost guaranteed I will be writing down either a recipe name to look up later on her website or a small shopping list if something looks delicious and I decide to shop for the ingredients that day. She makes everything look so easy, and when I have followed her instructions, my dishes always turn out just like hers.

She is one of the few television chefs where this has proven true for me! I like the variety of dishes that she has on her show and have made many of them from her pan pizza to her quick casseroles and soups. This is nothing short of amazing because I wasn’t blessed with the gift of cooking, and for my dishes to come out delicious is awesome. Her sense of humor and entertaining guests makes this a must-see every day, and on the occasional day where I can’t start my morning this way, I always record it to watch later that day. The one thing my husband grumbles about is the amount of cooking products I have ordered because of this show, but it is a good-natured grumble because he is eating better than he ever has before!

Face it, running any business is tough. Entrepreneurs do not have to deal with someone looking over their shoulder and barking orders but it takes a lot of initiative to make it work. Yeah, you may have attended some seminar at a four-star hotel in your neighborhood and some mouthpiece told you that you could have a successful business by spending a few hours a day on the online, right?

That's partially true. Promoting the right way is key to making your business work. Asking your friends to tell everybody is a good marketing tool to start off with ... and if you're fortunate your sales will trickle in, very slowly.

Taking Care of Photos

I take many photos -it has become a fact of my life. Memories come and go so what am Iwithout pictures to remind me of my past? That is the mentality I haveas I snap thousands of pictures per day.

Of course, that is noteven the easiest part. I still need to go home and edit everything. Theeasiest way for me to do this is to use Adobe Bridge. Especially withthe release of Adobe Bridge CS5, things have gotten infinitely easier.I can just drag over my batch of photos into Bridge and then makeperfect adjustments with the varying adjustment controls such asExposure, Contrast, Clarity, Saturation, etc. With Bridge (as is truefor all major programs that deal with this kind of photo management) Ican rate the photos with 1 through 5 stars so that I can later go backthrough these photos to see which I will upload to Facebook. Whether Iam on the go with WIFI on my laptop or at home with my satellite internet Batesville AR ,I can upload my five-star photos from wherever, add in the appropriateinformation such as location of the photos, photo descriptions, orwho's in the photos. Neighborhood Watch Programs Make The Community Safer

Living in a high-crime, metropolitan city, my neighborhood decided it was time to take action against crime. We decided it was time for a neighborhood watch program to be put in place. We all live together in this community, all with families and homes we wanted to protect. Neighbors helping neighbors began our new program.

It has worked out very well, but we have just began the whole process. I feel our neighborhood watch program is the best it can be. We have smart, dedicated volenteers who have spent countless hours working without local police department with our concerns.

Each week there is a meeting for all members of the community. This meeting is held to keep the community aware of what is going on around them, and to keep them informed of the happenings with the neighborhood watch program. There's always refreshments and snacks provided, and the meetings are quiet fun.

Believe it or not, the whole community is a great help with the program, and if it keeps going as smoothly as this, I am sure our program will remain successful. Since I took the extra step of figuring out how to get adt security in New Yorkand installing a home security alarm, I feel as safe as one could possibly feel. It's worked out great, and I couldn't be happier!
